Soft Fruit – Berries

Soft fruits are edible, juicy fruits with fleshy pericarp and usually have embedded seeds (small cores) in the pulp, e.g. blackberries, Cranberries, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, jostaberries, currants, gooseberries and grapes. Botanicall seen blackberries, strawberries and raspberries are not kind of soft fruit, but so-called seed fruits. However, usual in the trade they are led under the comprehensive term soft fruit.

In Austria, soft fruits rank among the most unattended kinds of fruit — especially in terms of cultivation, preservation of varieties and reproduction technique. For many kinds of soft fruit in Austria there are no collections of regionally important varieties and sources. Even though the cultivation of berries has quite a tradition in Austria.
